What is and how did you become involved your sport?
My sport is cycling and i became involved in cycling after doing Triathlons for 3 years, The demands of triathlon training were to hard when trying to study as well.

What is the reason you continue to play your sport today/motivation?
Definitely would be the feeling of winning, also being fit and healthy and i love the travelling that i do with my cycling.
People that have inspired you not only in sport but in life aswell?
My mum and dad, also other cyclists that have been successful at the top level
Great experiences that happened in your life?
Too many to pick from! but if i could say one it would be living the dream and travelling the world. Ever since high school i have been in the Australian cycling team and am able to experience lots of different places.
Your Interests and Hobbies outside of your sport?
Beach, movies, golf, plane watching
One tip or quote which continues to inspire you?
"If it was easy- everyone would be doing it"
Family Background and current family?
I grew up in the Sutherland Shire in Sydney with my parents and also my younger sister. Very active family that love our sport and love spending time at the beach.

Kate Bates
Who has been your most influential coach?
Gary Sutton, he has taken me from a state/national competitive bike rider to where i am today, competing on a world stage and a world champion.
How has playing your sport changed your life?
Sport is pretty much my life, it has been from an early age. When i was younger i used to play and do lots of different sports. I love meeting new people and challenging myself day in, day out.
What is the greatest advice you can pass onto young riders?
pain is temporary, glory last forever. All the hard-work and training is worth it in the end, if you train hard you are bound for success.
Remember no-one remembers who wins a race when your 14-15 years old, so stick at it.
Training Background(sports, etc)?
Athletics, Swimming, Soccer, Oz-tag/touch, Nippers, Hockey, Triathlons
Favourite Foods/Type of diet you follow?
Sushi and i tend to just stick to a healthy well-balanced diet with the occasional treat!
Describe a typical day?
Wake up around 7ish, breakfast, then on the bike for most of the morning, home for lunch, then back out on the bike or to the gym for a couple of hours, dinner, then be at 9pm.
Worst injury you have suffered?
Spasmed piraformus, sciatic nerve, bulging disc- All related
Favourite place to race?
Hisense Arena in Melbourne Australia
Greatest sporting moment you have had thus far?
Winning the Team Pursuit at the 2010 Track Cycling World Championships
Who has been your greatest rival?
Ever since crossing over to track cycling from triathlons i have always had a friendly rivalry with Joesphine Tomic who is now my Team mate.
What is your favourite movie?
Notebook
What one lesson did you take from your parents?
To never give up and always try my best with everything i do.
How do you deal with temptation?
Over the years i have learnt to deal with temptation, whether it would be with eating or going out with my friends. I have had to sacrifice alot throughout my teens, but wouldn't change anything for what i have/am doing.
What is your favourite music/band/song?
Pink
What is your biggest fear?
Dying
Do you believe "never giving up" is the difference between making it and not making it in any sport?
I certainly do, its something that was drilled into me while growing up and continue to stick to it today. It could be the difference between making an Australian team or not.
What inspired you to succeed?
Watching other athletes succeed at there given sport inspires me to get on my bike and achieve.
What did you want to be as a kid growing up?
A world class athlete in any sport.
Typical race day routine?
Wake up, 30mins on the bike, Breakfast, depending on what time i race, maybe lunch 2 hours before i race, go out to the track, warm up around 45mins before race, RACE!, warm down for 20mins
What is the ultimate prize for you in your sport and why?
Olympic Gold Medal
Your Future Goals in your sport , what are goals after you have finished racing?
I want to represent Australia at the 2012 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games. After racing i want to become involved with the development of increasing women's participation in Sport and also helping the younger cyclists to reach the top.
